Espace Perreault has produced Françoise Sullivan: ce pas qui vient de soi (2021), a biographical documentary directed by Xavier Curnillon that recalls the practice and works of Françoise Sullivan, an Automatist artist, signatory of the Refus global, and pioneer of modern and contemporary dance in Quebec. Alongside Gilles Lapointe, art historian who hosts the meeting with the artist, Sullivan retraces, with precision, the path that led her to creation: childhood memories of her first ballet class, her encounter of Paul-Émile Borduas, the inauguration of the group Les Automatistes, her time in New York and studies with Franziska Boas. Inspired by instinct, the unknown, and nature, Sullivan's artistic repertoire is recounted by the artist herself, passing through her early creations: Dualité (1947), Black and Tan (1948), Dédale (1948), as well as Danse dans la neige (1948) and several of her other best-known works. Touching and inspiring, Françoise Sullivan: ce pas qui vient de soi allows us to revisit some of the practices, collaborations, and pieces that have had the greatest impact on Quebec's cultural and artistic scene of the 20th century and of today.
